Today, state sovereignty is a joke and people almost universally look to the federal government to intercede -- take a look at the abortion debacle for a lovely example. Yes, the Confederacy was in the wrong for its support of slavery. But using that as a bludgeon to hide the legitimate grievances of the people is in its own way far more pernicious. The abolitionists won, they slew their great evil. The beurocratic evil is still strong.
